The Definition of Remote

The South Pacific isn’t a place you stumble into. Tahiti, Fiji, and the Cook Islands sit thousands of miles from the nearest continent, and that isolation is the entire point. The water is a shade of blue that photographs can’t capture. The pace of life adjusts itself the moment you arrive. This is travel at its most deliberately unplugged.

For tech executives who spend their days in back-to-back meetings and their evenings catching up on Slack, the South Pacific offers something therapeutic. There’s genuinely nothing to do here except be present. No historical sites demanding your attention, no packed itinerary of museums and landmarks. Just water, sky, and the kind of quiet that lets you hear yourself think for the first time in months.

Tahiti and French Polynesia

Bora Bora gets all the attention, and it deserves it — the lagoon is one of the most beautiful bodies of water on Earth. But Moorea is arguably more beautiful and significantly less crowded. The volcanic peaks, the pineapple fields, the reef that teems with blacktip sharks and rays — Moorea is where I send people who want the South Pacific without the Instagram crowds.

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates the only luxury ship permanently based in the region, and their 7-night Tahiti itinerary hits both islands plus Taha’a (where vanilla grows wild) and Huahine (the “Garden of Eden”). Windstar’s sailing yachts offer a more intimate alternative with 148 guests and their signature sail-away with sails unfurled and Sail Away music playing.

Fiji and the Cook Islands

Fiji’s 333 islands range from full-service luxury resorts to barefoot eco-lodges where you’re the only guests. The Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains are where the best resorts sit, accessible by seaplane or fast catamaran from Nadi. The Cook Islands — particularly Rarotonga and Aitutaki — deliver the same South Pacific magic with virtually no crowds. Aitutaki’s lagoon is, in my opinion, the most beautiful in the Pacific.

Pleasant Holidays offers exclusive Fiji, Cook Islands, and Tahiti hot deals that bundle inter-island flights with resort stays. These packages simplify logistics that would otherwise require serious coordination across multiple airlines and properties.

Why Cruise Here

Island-hopping by ship eliminates the logistical headache of multiple flights and hotel check-ins. You unpack once and wake up at a new island every morning. The smaller ships from Paul Gauguin and Windstar can anchor in lagoons that larger vessels can’t access, which means beach barbecues on private motus and snorkeling straight off the swim platform. Windstar’s currently offering up to $2,000 OBC plus a pre-cruise hotel stay and transfers — strong value on what’s already one of the most unique itineraries in cruising.

Why Groups Work Here

The South Pacific works for groups precisely because it’s not complex. There’s no itinerary to debate, no logistics to coordinate. Everyone snorkels, everyone eats together, everyone watches the sunset. The simplicity creates space for the kind of genuine relaxation and connection that more “activity-packed” destinations can’t deliver. For teams that are burned out and need a genuine reset, this is where I send them.

Resort buyouts in Fiji are more accessible than you’d think — smaller island properties with 10-20 rooms can be taken over entirely by a group of 20-40 people, creating a private retreat that’s impossible to replicate elsewhere.

When to Go

The dry season runs May through October, with July and August being the coolest and driest months. Water temperatures hover around 79°F year-round, so snorkeling conditions are excellent regardless of timing. November through April is warmer and wetter, but also less expensive — and “wet season” in the South Pacific often just means a brief afternoon shower followed by sunshine.
